Core Part 1: Adaptive Power —> Fall 2025
This 10-week applied functional anatomy training explores the pivotal core muscles that connect your pelvis to your ribs. When properly activated, these muscles connect the stability of your foundation to the movements of the upper body, protecting your lower back, bringing more freedom to your shoulders and neck and increasing upper body strength.
Each session will introduce a particular muscle (or group of muscles) and then explore the effect of isolating and engaging it in a variety of poses. This approach will give you tremendous insight into the state of your core, how it affects your foundation and upper body, and how to expand its dynamic potential. Topics include:
• Hip flexion and extension — iliopsoas, quads, glutes and hamstrings
• Anterior chain — rectus abdominals, obliques, transverse abdominals
• Posterior chain — quadratus lumborum, erector spinaes, latissimus dorsi
Symbolically, the core is a part of the Lower Triangle and contains the energies that connect us to the world. If we do not activate, purify and strengthen this part of ourselves, we tend to become increasingly attached to what we want and don’t want and, therefore, increasing preoccupied with trying to make other people and the world do and be what we want. This reactivity leaves us less able to ADAPT, or direct our life energy out of our habits to engage what is actually arising in the present moment.
Given the breadth of these subjects and our limited time, this course is primarily focused on the physical, but you can some of this larger framing to make its way into the course. You can also expect a shift in your ‘getting-shit-done’ energies.
